Presenter: Douglas A. Drossman, MD
Dr. Drossman is a professor of medicine and psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) and co-director of the university's Center for Functional GI and Motility Disorders. After he earned his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY, he served his medical internship and residency at UNC-CH. Between working as the senior associate medical resident at NYU-Bellevue Medical Center, fellow in psychosomatic medicine at the University of Rochester and then fellow in gastroenterology at UNC, he was chief of internal medicine at the U.S. Air Force Hospital, Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas. He has served in a number of positions for for the American Gastroenterological Association, including the AGA Gastroenterology Teaching Project. Currently he is chair of the Motility and Nerve Gut Interactions Section. From 1996 to 1997, he was president of the American Psychosomatic Society.
Dr. Drossman has written more than 250 articles and book chapters, has published two books, a GI Procedure Manual, and textbook of Functional GI Disorders, and serves on six editorial and advisory boards in Gastroenterology, psychosomatic medicine, behavioral medicine and patient health. He currently serves as associate editor for Gastroenterology and is president of the Rome Foundation for Disorders of GI Function.
The American Gastroenterological Association named Douglas Drossman, MD, the recipient of its 2004 Distinguished Educator Award for his accomplishments during his career in gastroenterology. The AGA Distinguished Educator Award honors an individual whom has made outstanding contributions as an educator in gastroenterology on both local and national levels.
